Questions
What parents ask.
What age is it for?
From Kindergarten. Children in Kindergarten to Year 2 start on the junior track, with large text and accuracy first. Older children start the main course.
Does my child need a keyboard?
To learn touch typing, yes: a computer, or a tablet with a keyboard. A phone works for practising words but is not the way to learn finger placement.
How long is each lesson?
Each lesson is a short set of drills on a few new keys, so a little practice most days works best.
Is there a free way to try it?
Yes. The home page has a 60-second typing test with no sign-up. Nothing you type is saved or sent. The paid plan also starts with a 7-day free trial.
What do children earn?
Trophies for a first lesson passed, 20 and 40 words a minute in a timed test at 95% accuracy or better, 95% accuracy in a run, five days of practice in a week, and a finished course. Each trophy unlocks a keycap skin. They are shown on the child's awards shelf and cannot be bought.
Does it use AI?
No. The tip after each run is written from that run's numbers.
How does the price work?
It is one price for the whole family, not per child: A$9.99 a month, or A$99.90 a year, which is two months free. You start with a 7-day free trial, and a card is needed to begin. After the trial it renews each month (or each year) until you cancel, and we email you before the trial ends. Prices include GST.
Can I cancel?
Yes, online, from your account page, in as few steps as it took to join. You keep access to the end of the paid month.
Is my child's information safe?
Nothing your child types leaves the course. See the privacy page for what we keep and who looks after it.
XType in short
XType teaches touch typing in short lessons, from the home row through capitals, numbers and symbols, with a junior track for Kindergarten to Year 2, an arcade and speed certificates. It works in the browser on a computer or tablet.
Questions parents ask
- Does XType work on a tablet or phone?
- XType works in the browser. Typing practice is best with a real keyboard, so a laptop, desktop or a tablet with a keyboard suits it best.
- What are the speed certificates?
- Children earn printable speed certificates from 10 to 70 words a minute, which they earn by typing a timed test accurately.
- Can parents see progress?
- Yes. A parent can see each child's practice, speed and accuracy from their own view.
- Does XType use AI?
- No. The tips children see are written from their own numbers, with no AI model involved.
- Are the trophies and keycaps real purchases?
- No. They are earned by practising, they cannot be bought and nothing is ever taken back. Nothing is sold on a child's screen.
